Public forum held to move forward with Vera petition

LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) -- Residents of District 7 got together Wednesday to move forward with a petition to recall Councilman Jorge Vera.

Dozens of people were at the public forum held at a local reception hall.

The forum was put together by local attorney George Altgelt.

He says it's only the first of more town hall meetings to come.

He's been trying to organize a petition to have a recall election that would potentially remove Vera from office.

Altgelt says people showing up tonight proves that residents care about the issue.

"You've gotta have city participation in order to have a meaningful government, and so if you look at the 'good ole boy' dynamic we have set up right now in downtown and at the county, throughout our local government, what is missing most of all is that city input," said Altgelt. "What this is is a statement to our elected officials that they are being watched, and that they are going to be held to a higher standard."

The group has until Thursday to turn in their petition with 132 signatures and the signatures must be certified by Friday.
