CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (KRIS) -- A Robstown doctor will spend just over three years in federal prison for Medicare and Medicaid fraud.

Dr. Roque Joel Ramirez plead guilty to engaging in a scheme from May 2008 to December 2011 in which fraudulent billings were submitted for services that were not performed.

The charges included 4,970 false claims worth more than one million dollars. In some cases, the claims included treatments for patients who were deceased at the time.

Furthermore, he was actually out of the country or in another state on days when he claimed to be caring for patients. Prosecutors also say Ramirez would have to worked 24 hours a day to see all the patients he filed claims for.

Ramirez opted to enter a guilty plea on one count of mail fraud rather than proceed with a trial. He faced up to 20 years in prison. His Calallen-based Health Resolutions Inc. is now closed.
