LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - A local organization plants a tree not only for Earth Day, but also for a fallen hero.

The South Texas Afghanistan-Iraq Veterans Association (STAIVA) held an event called "Operation Earth Day," where they honored the memory of El Cenizo native Juan Rodriguez Velasco.

He died at age 23 after receiving injuries as a result of enemy action during "Operation Iraqi Freedom." STAIVA chose to honor his memory by making the world just a little bit greener.

"The goal is to have an honor of the local fallen hero," said STAIVA secretary Homero Prado, Jr. "Where the family, friends, and even the community can come out and know that the tree is planted in recognition of a local fallen hero."

STAIVA is a non-profit organization responsible for such other events as "Operation H2O" and "Operation Toy Drive."
