Called the mother church of the Dioceses of Laredo, San Agustin Cathedral traces it's beginning to Don Tomas and a group of Spanish families back in 1755. The cathedral was founded July 3rd, 2000 and has gone through repairs though the years. The newest project is the roof and some paint. Something Father Francisco Hernandez is excited to see.
"I'm very happy because were doing repairs, it's been a while since we painted."
Father Hernandez has worked with the church for 8 years and sees the amount of work that goes into keeping the maintenance up on a building as old the cathedral.
"It's a lot of work been done here. We need to work on the pews and floors, everywhere you look something needs to be done."
Little by little the church does what they can to keep this historic building around for future generations. Alejandro Rodriguez goes to school downtown and says it's important to keep history alive.
"We have to keep all historic things we have, it’s important to keep our history. It would be awesome to get married in the same place your father and mother did. That would be awesome."
A piece of history, connecting generations.
