LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) - It's 17-year-old Renan Alves’ first day of school in the United States.
“It's like a dream for me. I want to study here. Along time ago I had this dream. It's good for my future, for my job.”
Renan wants to be a doctor, just like his father. He came here to study and to better learn the English language. But the first thing he noticed when he got to Laredo had nothing to do with school.
“The most different is the weather. Here, it's pretty, pretty hot. It's really hot.”
Renan is one of about ten foreign exchange students United High School has had in the past few years. He takes normal classes, just like every other junior at United. But so far, his favorite is ROTC.
“The people in this class are very friendly. The teacher asks for all the guys, 'Why you chose ROTC?' And all of them said because here in ROTC we are like a family and I like it.”
Renan is looking forward to making lifelong friends while here in Laredo.
