LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) - The purpose of Memorial Day is to honor fallen soldiers, and there are some local students who want to make that message known.

Seven United High School students held a Memorial March along Loop 20 to honor these heroes.

"There's a lot of people that don't know why we have Memorial Day," said student Jeremy Collet. "I just wanted to show why we do this. There's a lot of troops that don't come home."

They were joined by the National Guard, as well as a number of volunteers.

"It is one of the reasons we're actually free," said National Guard Staff Sergeant Edgar Hernandez. "They fought for us. We fought together. I'm just glad we had volunteers that took time off their schedule to come out here and be part of this."

This was the very first time the students had this march, and it was all their idea.

"I believe we should be very thankful for those that have fallen, those that have served," said Collet. "Me personally, when I see a veteran, I thank them every day."

The National Guard says they hope to get many more volunteers to make next year's march even better.
