LAREDO, TX (KGNS) – With Spring Break having officially started Monday, Sheriff Martin Cuellar reminds the community of several safety tips to ensure families enjoy the holiday.

While many children are home this week, parents who own firearms are reminded to properly secure and store their weapons. It is extremely important that parents treat their firearms as if they were loaded at all times and to remind their children not to touch the firearms for any reason. As a gun owner, parents have the responsibility not only to their family members, but to those who visit their homes.

In addition to gun safety, parents should also be mindful of the dangers of internet predators. As children have more time to be chatting online and surfing the web, parents should follow a few safety measures to keep their children safe. Allocating hours for children to visit social media sights can be helpful. Remind children not to share or provide any personal information online unless authorized by the parent. In addition, children should never to agree to meet up with someone they don’t know. Most importantly, always talk with your children about reporting any inappropriate situations that may occur online.

Spring Break ends Friday, March 14.
