West side residents help save two lives

Laredo, TX -- On the short stretch of camp avenue in West Laredo, neighbors helped save a life.

"For me the first thing is not to panic," said Felix Rodriguez, who helped lift the two from under a car. "The first thing is it was the safety for the baby because she was underneath the car. And the mom was on the ground. She was also struck. So the first thing, we were trying to get the baby out, that's the first thing."

Rodriguez says a car parked along the curb was running and thrown in reverse accidentally. It backed up and ran over a mother and child.

Rodriguez and at least six others ran over from where they were. They managed to lift the car and pull out the victims.

The child who was run over was flown to San Antonio for care. Her mother is currently at Laredo Medical Center.

Police say the vehicle is being examined. They are still investigating and cannot say whether it was an accident yet. They say the man who was operating the vehicle is cooperating.
