ZAPATA, TEXAS (KGNS) - Students in Zapata County are enjoying an extra week of summer. But it won't last too much longer. They'll go back September 1. This is something the school district had planned since May.
Villarreal and South Elementary had some structure damages that needed to be repaired before students went back to school. They were able to fix the problems during the summer, but had to delay the opening of school by one week.
“We were able to find top of the line contractors that could do the job. Really this job is a six month job and we were able to complete it in 90 days. Thus, if we did the 90 days that would put us into August.”
The repairs have been made and Zapata ISD representatives said they are ready for the students to return. Because of the late start, school will be going a little later this year to make up for it.
