ZAPATA, TEXAS- Many changes are coming to Zapata ISD. Raul Nuques is the new superintendent. One of the biggest changes he is making is bringing back the fine arts to Zapata elementary schools.
Students now have a chance to take art and music classes that were not offered before to students. Zapata middle school now has a Mariachi class and in the coming years, it could also be offered to students as young as in the fourth grade. Mr. Nuques said it's important for students to be exposed to the fine arts.
“Sure you to have to have the academics, but you also need to build the whole child and that's one of the things in our strategic plan. Not only academics, but also in performing arts and physical fitness and physical education and so on.”
Elementary students now have a rotating schedule of 'specials' every day. Some days they will go to music or media class, while other days they will have PE. For next year, Mr. Nuques wants to put a physical education curriculum into place. He says eating right and exercise starts at school.
