Health risks of juicing

While a drink made purely of fresh fruits and vegetables sounds healthy, it can create or exacerbate health problems in those who have chronic conditions or take certain drugs.

Juicing diets are also low in fiber and protein and high in calories.

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (WOAI) - Juicing or juice fasting to lose weight or detox may do your body more harm than good.

While a drink made purely of fresh fruits and vegetables sounds healthy, it can create or exacerbate health problems in those who have chronic conditions or take certain drugs.

Nutritionists at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles say juicing can damage the kidneys and thyroid gland and can cause diabetes in people who have pre-diabetes.

Juicing diets are also low in fiber and protein and high in calories. As for detoxing, juicing does not work.

Nutrition experts say your body has a way of detoxing on its own through the liver, intestines and kidneys.
