SAN ANTONIO, TX (WOAI) - Charges have been dropped against a mother in Arkansas who was arrested after she was seen drinking beer, then breastfeeding her baby at a restaurant.

Police had charged her with endangering the welfare of a child, but the charge was dropped because there wasn't enough evidence to prove she had one too many drinks to care for her child.

This raised questions for doctors. If a mother is breastfeeding doctors say they need to take all the precautions to protect their baby.

Christus Santa Rosa Childrens Hospital Neonatologist, Dr. George Powers, says if you're not careful the same amount of alcohol that makes it into your bloodstream can make it into breast milk.

Dr. Powers said your blood alcohol will be high and the alcohol level in breast milk will be high and you can expose your baby to potentially harmful levels of alcohol.

Studies show alcohol can affect your babies' eating and sleeping and can even make them drowsy. Dr. Powers says if you have a drink wait at least 2 hours before nursing or pumping again.
