Two people dead at naval station shooting

The shooting happened Monday night on board the U.S.S. Mahan.

It's not clear how the civilian got on the ship or what motivated the shooting.

NORFOLK, VA (NBC) - Two people are dead following a shooting Monday night at the naval station in Norfolk, Virginia.

A Navy spokesman says the shooting happened around 11:20 pm local time on board the U.S.S. Mahan.

One sailor was killed, and the gunman, a civilian, was shot and killed by security forces.

It's not clear how the civilian got on the ship or what motivated the shooting.

No one else was hurt in the incident. The base has been secured and is back to normal operations this morning.
