Authorities uncover "marijuana plantation" just west of Lasara

(KGBT) -- Some 14 people are in custody after authorities discovered a vast "marijuana plantation" growing just west of Lasara.

It all happened at a field off County Road 10 in rural Willacy County just after 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Full details were not immediately available but authorities were raiding a stash house for illegal immigrants when they discovered at least two acres of marijuana plants.

U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents are investigating the case.

HSI spokeswoman Nina Pruneda told Action 4 News that agents discovered a "significant grow field" and that 14 people are in custody.

Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence told Action 4 News that Border Patrol agents found an illegal immiigrant in the area on Wednesday night.

The immigrant told authorities that he escaped from the stash house prompting a criminal investigation that ended with the raid on Thursday afternoon.
