Human trafficking is happening in all Bexar County zip codes, from city streets to suburban neighborhoods.
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (WOAI) - Bexar County District Attorney Susan Reed says right now her office has about 50 active human trafficking cases.
Reed went on to say human trafficking is happening in all zip codes from city streets to suburban neighborhoods.
Bexar County Assistant District Attorney Kirsta Leeburg Melton says human trafficking could be at your door or one click away on the internet.
Melton says a potential predator could be talking to your child on a phone chat line or over the computer, that's why she adds it's important to know what your child is up to.
She adds even good kids who make great grades and have college plans can make mistakes of judgment. Melton says she's seen cases where a teenager gets into a fight with their parents and starts talking about their troubles over the computer or a phone chat line. She shared the story of one young victim who called a phone chat line and was ultimately trafficked.
Melton went on to say the young girl ended up on the street and was forced into prostitution. She was later found under a city bridge.
There's one human trafficking case the Bexar County Assistant District Attorney says will never leave her. The case involved a 13-year-old girl who skipped school to buy drugs.
Melton says parents should talk to their children about trafficking, and keep a close eye on what their children are up to especially on line.
