Man assaults woman on bicycle and three bystanders in attempted robbery

Police arrested Charlie Rivera and charged him with robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and evading arrest with a bond totaling $155,000.

HARLINGEN, TEXAS (KVEO) - A Harlingen man has been arrested for robbery and aggravated assault after stealing a purse from a woman riding her bicycle.

On Thursday, May 8th at around 6:00 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 500 block of W. Taylor Avenue in reference to an assault in progress.

When officers arrived the victim pointed out to a man in an alleyway as the suspect who approached her while she was on her bike on the 500 block of S. D Street and intentionally pushed her off the bike and attempted to take her purse from the basket.

A witness to the assault attempted to help the woman but the suspect, later identified as Charlie Rivera, 22, threw a cement stone striking the witness on the hand and upper lip.

Rivera then attempted to flee the area but two other men tried to stop him but were also assaulted with a piece of wood.

Police arrested Rivera and charged him with robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and evading arrest with a bond totaling $155,000.
