ALVARADO, TX (AP) - A raid on a North Texas cockfighting ring has led to more than a dozen arrests and the seizure of nearly 100 birds.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office on Monday announced the estimated 90 surviving animals have been turned over to the Humane Society of North Texas.

Sheriff Bob Alford says the raid happened Saturday night near Alvarado after deputies received information about cockfighting, which is illegal in Texas.

Alford says some people fled but 17 were arrested on charges of attending a cockfight or cruelty to non-livestock animals. More charges are expected.

Deputies seized 97 roosters and other chickens, but at least a half dozen have died. Investigators also recovered cockfighting paraphernalia and drugs, alcohol, gambling charts and a handgun.

Alvarado is 20 miles south of Fort Worth.
