Andrew Clay Weatherford has been charged with animal cruelty.

DILLEY, TEXAS (WOAI) - Police in South Texas today arrested a man who they say starved his 26-year old horse to death.

Andrew Clay Weatherford, 37, has been charged with animal cruelty. If convicted, he could face up to a $4,000 fine and a year in prison.

Frio County Constable Rene Lozano found the horse. An attending veterinarian called the horse's condition the "worst of the worst" he's ever seen.

Lozano, along correctional officers from the nearby Briscoe Prison Unit, the Dilley Police Department, and the Frio County Sheriff's Office helped arrest Weatherford.

Police confiscated three remaining horses on the property. Lozano says the hooves of one of the horses were severely deformed. "If we don't do nothing about it, nothing is going to get done. They're gonna be here and they're gonna die," Lozano said.
