Lt. Col. Nancy Russell is spear heading an effort to build a national monument in Washington DC to honor Gay and Lesbian military veterans.

The retired Army officer says a fund raising effort is underway to help build the monument inside a privately owned cemetery.

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (WOAI) - Lt. Col. Nancy Russell is spear heading an effort to build a national monument in Washington, DC to honor Gay and Lesbian military veterans.

"This is something that has been a long time coming", Russell said.

The retired Army officer says a fund raising effort is underway to help build the monument inside a privately owned cemetery.

There will be three different pillars, 11 feet high, representing all branches of the military.

"This is something specifically for those people who have part of their life, risked their lives, someone who died it's for them", Russell went on to say.
