AUSTIN, TX (KXAN) - A fight and gunshot triggered a SWAT operation in North Austin late Sunday night.

Police got calls about the incident at about 9:35 p.m. They found an assault victim outside a home in the 7400 block of Bethune Avenue. Although a shot was fired, no one was hit by a bullet.

Police say there were several witnesses who scattered when they heard the shots.

Officers tried to talk with the suspect, who they believed was still inside the home. They called in the SWAT team to help at about 11:30 p.m.

SWAT officers surrounded the home and used a public-address system to try to talk to the suspect. They also used what they call “distraction devices” that may have awoken neighbors.

After several hours, a man and a woman called 911 from inside the house and eventually complied with officers’ commands to come outside and submit to interviews with detectives.

At that point, just before 4 a.m., the SWAT officers’ search determined the assault suspect was no longer in the home.

Officers stress, this is not a “stranger-on-stranger” crime. The victim identified the suspect, but police have not released his name. He has not been arrested yet.
