SXSW crash suspect Rashad Owens indicted for capital murder

AUSTIN,TEXAS (KXAN) — The man who police say was behind the wheel of the car that killed four people and hurt 22 others when it plowed through barricades and into a crowd full of people waiting for a South by Southwest show has been indicted on one count of capital murder and four counts of murder, along with 24 aggravated assault counts.

Rashad Owens, 21, has been in jail on a $5.5 million bond since his arrest following the March 13 crash. A court hearing is scheduled for June 3.

A Travis County Grand Jury handed up their indictment Monday.

After being treated and released for minor injuries sustained in the crash, Owens agreed to a breath test. It showed his blood-alcohol content as .114, according an arrest affidavit. The legal limit in Texas in .08.

Officers on DUI patrol originally tried to stop Owens because the car he was driving did not have its headlights on. Owens told officers he saw the lights in his mirror and got scared because he had warrants out for his arrest and did not want to go to jail, the document said. Owens said he had a kidnapping warrant and told police he was in a custody battle over his daughter, the warrant said.

This run in with the law is not his first. In 2011, Owens spent 10 days in jail after pleading guilty to being intoxicated after fleeing the scene of a collision in Alaska.
