AUSTIN, TX (KXAN) - Austin police say 41 auto thefts have been reported in the area around the University of Texas campus and west toward MoPac.

The cars were mostly taken from public areas and apartment complexes.

Of the thefts, 16 were mopeds or scooters. Police believe suspects are loading them onto trucks and driving away.

Police recommend locking these types of cars to something, just as you would a bicycle, if they are being left out overnight.

Authorities also remind drivers to never leave keys in your car or leave a running car unattended.
