ROUND ROCK, TEXAS (KXAN) - For the past seven years, the Texas Advocacy Project has collected thousands of donated purses and shipped them to women shelters across the state as part of their Handbags for Hope Campaign.
This year, the agency were able to to collect 3,830 purses for victims of domestic violence.
One of the partners this year, Cedar Ridge High School’s varsity volleyball team used the drive to help spread awareness on teen dating violence.
On Thursday, the team showed off all the bags they were able to collect.
“When we found them at this project, we just thought it was a great way to go out into the community and help people,” said Lauren Walker, a junior at Cedar Ridge High School. “When we heard about the opportunity, we knew we couldn’t turn it down.”
Before the handbags are given to the shelters, the bags are fitted with a tag that has Texas Advocacy Project’s toll-free legal domestic violence hotline number and pamphlets detailing steps to get and stay safe.
