Young woman admits setting fire and killing autistic brother

Homicide detectives arrested a 19-year-old woman in connection with a fire that killed her brother just a few days before Christmas.

19-year-old Miranda Herrera admitted to investigators she conspired with another girl to set the fire at her home in the 4800 block of Castle Pine on December 19, 2013.

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (WOAI) - Homicide detectives arrested a 19-year-old woman in connection with a fire that killed her brother just a few days before Christmas.

According to an arrest affidavit, 19-year-old Miranda Herrera admitted to investigators she conspired with another girl to set the fire at her home in the 4800 block of Castle Pine on December 19, 2013.

The fire killed her autistic brother, 22-year-old David Herrera, Jr., and left her father, David Herrera, Sr., in critical condition.

The fire was ruled accidental at the time, but the report says that Herrera's friend admitted to several attempts to set the house on fire including lighting cooking oil in the kitchen, pouring water on electric outlets and setting a couch on fire.

Herrera told officers she and the 17-year-old suspect set the fire in hopes of collecting an insurance settlement. Herrera has been charged with capital murder and attempted capital murder. The identity of the 17-year-old suspect has not been released.

She faces a charge of attempted capital murder.
