LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - An academy, first of its kind, was announced Monday at TAMIU along with state officials and university representatives.
The Texas Academy of International and STEM Studies at TAMIU will offer the courses for gifted junior and senior high school students with a special focus on science, techonology, engineering, and math fields.
Once a student has completed the courses they will earn a high school diploma along with college credits towards a Bachelor's degree. The progam was made possible by a bill initiated by Senator Judith Zaffirini.
"They will participate with the highest qualified professors, secure mentoring, and tutoring, and counseling, and the support that they need to succeed," said Zaffirini.
Only 50 students will be selected for the program. Those selected will receive free tuition, fees, and books.
