Under orders from President Obama, the US military is now flying surveillance missions over Syria to identify possible targets.

WASHINGTON, DC (NBC) - As President Obama was in Charlotte talking about neutralizing a growing terror threat, news was breaking that an American citizen was killed in Syria while fighting for the terror group Isis.

Minnesota native Douglas MacArthur McCain - an example of the kind of home-grown Jihadist most feared by the US government.

As US air strikes are helping to push back Isis advances in Iraq, the Pentagon is now preparing for the possibility of hitting Isis where it lives - in Syria.

Under orders from President Obama, the US military is now flying surveillance missions over Syria to identify possible targets.

Addressing the American Legion, President Obama had a message for the terrorists who executed American journalist James Foley.

"America does not forget," said Obama. "Our reach is long. We are patient. Justice will be done. We have proved time and time again we will do what's necessary to capture those who harm Americans.

Punishing those terrorists though, means a major expansion of a fight few Americans want.

We're learning Isis is holding an American woman hostage - an aid worker kidnapped last year in Syria.
