(NBC) - Former US Army major and convicted killer Nidal Hasan says he wants to join the terrorist group Isis.

Hasan, who is on death row for the murder of 13 people at Ft. Hood in 2009, has written a letter to Isis telling them he wants to be part of their jihad.

In the two page handwritten letter, Hasan writes - "I formally and humbly request to be made a citizen of the Islamic state. It would be an honor for any believer to be an obedient citizen soldier to a people and its leader who don't compromise the religion of all-mighty Allah to get along with the disbelievers."

He signed the letter with the initials SOA which stands for "Soldier of Allah."

Hasan's lawyer says the letter shows that Hasan's "religious zeal" motivated his actions.

The Obama administration maintains that Hasan is not a Muslim terrorist, and continues to classify the shooting as "workplace violence."
