TAIPEI, TAIWAN (NBC) - A university student wielding a knife killed four people and wounded at least 21 others on a subway train in Taiwan Wednesday.

Local media reported the attack happened around 4:00 pm local time, at the start of the evening rush hour.

The government's central news agency described panicked subway passengers rushing from the train when it arrived at a station, shouting for those on the platform to flee.

Security guards called police, who arrived within minutes and detained the man, according to reports.

Police say the man used a three-inch knife in the attack, and was also carrying another blade three-times as long.
