SICILIAN COAST, ITALY (NBC) - Italian authorities say more than 100 children were among the almost 500 migrants rescued off the Sicilian Coast Thursday.

The unrest in Syria and Libya has caused a spike in the number of dangerously overloaded migrant boats coming from North Africa to Italy.

The rescued children were allowed to watch television as they were carried to a Sicilian port.

A disastrous sinking in October 2013 that left hundreds of migrants dead spurred an Italian operation to prevent similar disasters.

So far, more than 43,000 people have been rescued from the sea as part of the operation.
