Princess Cruises believes the norovirus is the cause of the outbreak.

The Crown Princess left Los Angeles on Saturday for a seven-day Pacific cruise.

ENSENADA, MEXICO (NBC) - Princess Cruises confirms that 83 people on one of its cruise ships are suffering from the norovirus.

The Crown Princess, seen here off the Mexican coast, is making its way back to California.

The number of people with the extremely contagious virus has more then doubled over the past few days.

Sixty-six passengers and 17 crew members have contracted norovirus. There are more than 3,000 passengers on the ship.

None of the passengers have requested to leave the ship and they've been instructed to frequently wash their hands.

The centers for disease control said it's monitoring the situation and the ship's efforts to prevent the virus from spreading.

The ship's expected to arrive in San Diego Thursday.
