Yazidis bombard military helicopter

There are unconfirmed reports the helicopter came under fire after taking off.

Thousands of Yazidis fled from Isis fighters who overran most of western Syria and northern Iraq.

MT. SINJAR, IRAQ (NBC) - A dramatic scene of chaos and despair as hundreds try to pack a military helicopter.

Hundreds of Yazidis stranded on a mountain side in northern Iraq tried to pack into an Iraqi military helicopter that was delivering emergency aid.

A British news crew inside the helicopter captured the chaotic scene as refugees threw their children inside the chopper. Dozens of others packed inside before the the helicopter lifted off.

There are unconfirmed reports the helicopter came under fire after taking off.

Thousands of Yazidis fled from Isis fighters who overran most of western Syria and northern Iraq.

The Yazidis are followers of an ancient religion and said the militants gave them a choice of converting to Islam or being killed.

Last week, President Obama announced humanitarian air-drops to help those stranded on the mountainside and ordered airstrikes against Isis targets in northern Iraq.
