It's the event that started it all, as the Border Olympics Track and Field championships got underway this afternoon at the SAC. Competitors from all over south Texas are in Laredo for the 82nd annual meet. Things got going with Edinburg Velas Brandon Rivera winning the boys high jump by leaping 6'6” into the air. He tried for 6'8” but couldn't quite get there. He would out jump all the other boys by ten inches.
Also in a final, the girls 3200 meter race saw a pair of Laredo athletes in the top three with Rebekah Hernandez of Alexander in 2nd and Abby Madrigal of United South in 3rd. Tomorrow will see the finals in many of the events with things kicking off at 10:30 in the morning and running most of the day.
