Martin stands as the only school to have all four boys teams not only make the playoffs but win at least one round as well.
With the high school sports season over here in Laredo, there was one campus that stood above the rest when it came to the boys teams and it's probably not the one you're expecting to hear.
The Martin Tigers sit alone as the only school to claim not only making the playoffs in the all four boys team sports, but they all won at least one round as well. Football, basketball, soccer, and baseball all excelled for the Tigers this year but it didn't come easy.
"I think the difference was the hard work from all the sports was very good and hard work pays off." (Miguel Espinoza, Tigers soccer)
"Everybody walks around with a hop in their step. Every body is happy to be a tiger right now but i think more than just the kids being happy and having that buzz around, it kind of sparks a buzz within the community." (David Charles, Tigers football coach)
The students say it was a great atmosphere around campus with a type of support from other athletes that can be rare.
"Everyone here in school supports you and congratulated you every time they saw you, so it was a great experience and a great feeling for me." (Aldair Gonzalez, Martin Soccer & Football)
"Everybody picks each other up, no one puts the other down. We all pull for each other."
These athletes were not only stellar in on the field but were an example for other students in the classroom as well.
"These kids are excelling in the classroom. They're above and beyond the normal student that isn't involved in any extracurricular activities. So we're talking about students that are not only excellent on the field but we also have some all state students for academics." (Guillermo Pro, Martin High Principal)
"If the athletic teams are winning the discipline problems are down and the test scores are up and I’m happy to say our boys have been doing a tremendous job in the classroom."
Now as the season comes to a close these athletes that are moving on hope the marks they set are only the beginning for years to come.
"Everyone thinks it's United and Alexander that will make it in all those sports but we're the only school that did it this year and it's an honor." (Jose Castillo, Martin Baseball player)
"Everyone is thankful for this and hopefully they can continue the tradition."
In all the Tigers four team sports won a total of six playoff games with the basketball and baseball teams making the regional quarterfinal rounds and football and soccer reaching the area round. For football it was the schools first ever playoff win.
