We continue with our high school football preview coverage by heading south down Hwy-83 to Zapata. The Hawks are fresh off their first playoff victory in a decade and looking to add to the foundation set down in 2013.
The Hawks bring back an impressive number of starters with nine players on each side of the ball returning in 2014.
"Every season is a new season, so we're working hard, chipping away, trying to get back to where we were at last season and then build on that."
On offense Zapata will have to replace one of their all-time greats as Miguel Alvarez is gone, but there is still plenty of firepower wearing maroon this season, including his younger brother Brandon.
"He was our main guy to go to but I think our offense is going to progress."
"We've got a lot of weapons now. You don't know if the run is coming or if the pass is coming. And the whole offensive line is coming back, so that's a big positive."
On defense it looks to be a much more pressing and aggressive style where the Hawks will try to take advantage of having all three linebackers back from last year’s team.
"We're going to be more of an attacking type of defense and the quickness and athleticism that we do have, along with the experience is going to be real beneficial to us."
For this year’s Hawks team the goal is to continue to build and hopefully make that third round of the playoffs.
"I think we're going to be really successful. I have faith in my team and I think we're going to come through. District title for sure, hopefully. Playoffs for sure too."
The Hawks will get a Laredo school in their first week of play as they face Cigarroa one week from Friday. Be sure to tune into a special preview edition of Friday Football Fever tomorrow night at 10:20 as we go in depth on all seven Laredo schools.
