WHAT: Press conference announcing details of bowling tournament

WHEN & Wednesday, August 26, 2015 10:00 a.m.
WHERE: Jett Bowl North, 701 Gale

WHY: Come find out details of 2nd Annual Krizia L. Keiser Memorial Foundation Bowl-A-Thon, which will take place on Tuesday, September 1, 2015, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Jett Bowl North. The foundation seeks to raise awareness of the gift of organ donation and brain aneurysms.

Krizia with her selfless act of kindness has taught us all the importance of sharing even, at the time of one’s passing.

Krizia passed away of a massive aneurysm a week shy of her 19th birthday on June 6, 2013; and with her noble gift of organ donation she was able to give life to three lucky recipients. Brain aneurysms are silent killers that are taking lives faster than we know.

This foundation grants scholarships to local students and, when available, money is set aside for helping people whose loved one gets flown out of Laredo for medical emergencies. These funds will help families with a night’s hotel stay, meals, gas, etc.

Krizia’s parents, family and friends would like for her memory and legacy to live on. In their lives she was and will always remain the biggest inspiration.

“She was a noble hero, because without hesitation and no doubt she opted to be a donor to help those in need by giving the gift of life,” said Cm. Vela. “I am honored to host this bowling tournament.”

WHERE: Jett Bowl North, 701 Gale

WHY: City of Laredo District V Council Member Roque Vela, along with the City of
Laredo Health Department have partnered with the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center for a Summer Blood Drive, taking place this Saturday, July 18, 2015, in the parking lot of Jett Bowl North, located at 701 Gale, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

“I’m extremely proud to help host this Summer Blood Drive with the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center,” said Cm. Vela. “Summer is a critical time for blood supplies; it is important that those of us who are healthy and able to donate, do so. You never know; it could be you or a loved one who may be in need of blood.”

Blood is used for cancer patients, open-heart surgery patients, diabetics, recipients of organ or tissue transplants, and trauma victims.

Blood supplies often run low in summer months at the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center because of the summer break at schools. One-third of all STBTC collections come from drives at educational institutions, with 26 percent coming from high schools alone.

Hospitals across the state rely on these STBTC to help collect the critical blood supply necessary for their procedures.

UISD Board Room 201 Lindenwood Drive
On July 1, 2015, the United Independent School District (UISD), will launch a time saving, safe, on-line procurement portal that will greatly improve communication between the Districts’ Purchasing Department and its vendors and bidders.

This new portal, called E-bid, will enhance UISD’s ability to maintain accurate and up-to date information on the goods and services that vendors wish to sell to the District.

In addition, E-bid will electronically notify registered vendors of bid opportunities for their goods and services. It will also allow interested vendors to electronically submit their bids to the Purchasing Office for evaluation. It should be noted that Ebid will effectively phase out the current system of exchanging physical documents.

All businesses wishing to offer their goods and services, or participate in UISD’s bid process will be required to register with the Ebid portal (at no charge) via the District’s website at www.uisd.net. Further details about how to register will be announced this summer.

An upcoming press conference will provide further details about the Ebid portal. It will be held on June 18, 2015 at 9:00 a.m., at the UISD Board Room located at 201 Lindenwood Drive.

In addition, an instructional seminar for Ebid will be held free of charge for all current and potential vendors and bidders. The seminar is scheduled for Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. at UISD’s SAC Auditorium, located at 5208 Sta. Claudia Lane.

WHEN:
May 19, 2015 at 10:00 a.m.

WHERE:
Clark Elementary School located at 500 W. Hillside Road

ADDITIONAL:
The Miles of Smiles-Laredo (MOS) program provides free school-based oral health promotion and disease prevention services to economically disadvantaged children in the two largest school districts in Webb County (Laredo), TX, located along the Texas-Mexico border. The Miles of Smiles-Laredo program has a sustained track record of nine years utilizing innovative solutions through school-based oral health promotion in 44 elementary schools. Approximately 8,500 Hispanic children receive preventive dental services each year through the MOS program. In the border region, oral health disparities, along with general health disparities, are profound given the high percentage of uninsured/underinsured individuals living in poverty.

Miles of Smiles-Laredo provides limited oral evaluations (dental screenings) and fluoride varnish applications to children in kindergarten, first, second and third grades. Dental sealants are placed on first permanent molar teeth of second grade children. After children are screened in the MOS school-based program, children with an unmet oral health care need are triaged into the dental case management system. The dental case manager will locate a dentist in the referral network and partner with the parent or guardian to obtain dental care for the child. Screening and case management information is collected and evaluated using SmilesMaker©, an innovative electronic chairside data collection tool for the Miles of Smiles-Laredo program.

The MOS program, created and administered at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) School of Dentistry, expanded existing relationships with the United Independent School District (UISD) and Laredo Independent School District (LISD) to achieve shared goals to improve the oral health of underserved children. Through public-private partnerships, dentists in the Laredo community serve as a referral base for children participating in the MOS program. A collaboration with the Caring for Children, Care Van Program provided transportation to allow the MOS portable dental program to serve children with greater efficiency.

Clark Elementary School was the only school in United ISD that 100% on its students participate in the program.
