WHAT:

WHEN:
May 19, 2015 at 10:00 a.m.

WHERE:
Clark Elementary School located at 500 W. Hillside Road

ADDITIONAL:
The Miles of Smiles-Laredo (MOS) program provides free school-based oral health promotion and disease prevention services to economically disadvantaged children in the two largest school districts in Webb County (Laredo), TX, located along the Texas-Mexico border. The Miles of Smiles-Laredo program has a sustained track record of nine years utilizing innovative solutions through school-based oral health promotion in 44 elementary schools. Approximately 8,500 Hispanic children receive preventive dental services each year through the MOS program. In the border region, oral health disparities, along with general health disparities, are profound given the high percentage of uninsured/underinsured individuals living in poverty.

Miles of Smiles-Laredo provides limited oral evaluations (dental screenings) and fluoride varnish applications to children in kindergarten, first, second and third grades. Dental sealants are placed on first permanent molar teeth of second grade children. After children are screened in the MOS school-based program, children with an unmet oral health care need are triaged into the dental case management system. The dental case manager will locate a dentist in the referral network and partner with the parent or guardian to obtain dental care for the child. Screening and case management information is collected and evaluated using SmilesMaker©, an innovative electronic chairside data collection tool for the Miles of Smiles-Laredo program.

The MOS program, created and administered at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) School of Dentistry, expanded existing relationships with the United Independent School District (UISD) and Laredo Independent School District (LISD) to achieve shared goals to improve the oral health of underserved children. Through public-private partnerships, dentists in the Laredo community serve as a referral base for children participating in the MOS program. A collaboration with the Caring for Children, Care Van Program provided transportation to allow the MOS portable dental program to serve children with greater efficiency.

Clark Elementary School was the only school in United ISD that 100% on its students participate in the program.
