WHAT: Reading on The Roof/Book Giveaway
WHEN: New day -Friday, November 7, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
WHERE: United Middle School, 700 East Del Mar Blvd. (in front of school)
Ms. Rebecca Morales, Principal at United Middle School (UMS), has challenged students to read for a minimum of 900 minutes for this six week period. Students that met the goal will be allowed to join her as she reads from the book The Adventures of Beanboy by Lisa Harkrader on the roof of the UMS campus. 30 copies of the book will also be given away at the conclusion of the event.

WHY: Join the Laredo Public Library for an exciting literary event …
“The Laredo Book Festival: The Best of Texas and Beyond!” on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The Festival celebrates Texas and local authors and illustrators and encourages interest in books and reading! This event is FREE and open to the public! Join us for the Ribbon Cutting at 10:00 a.m. Many Texas and local authors and illustrators are scheduled to appear.

Events to be held:
· Book signings: Meet authors and illustrators and have your books signed throughout the day.
· Books sales: Books will be available for sale and a portion of the sales will benefit the Friends of the Library.
· Arts and Crafts
· Children’s Program with Reader Bear and Book Characters Splat the Cat and Babymouse.
· Readings by Children’s, Young Adult, and Adult Authors
· Fundraising raffle by the Friends of the Library of an iPad, Skylanders Starter Packs, and many other prizes (winner does not need to be present).
· First 100 children receive a free “Pawtographed” book from Splat the Cat and Babymouse.

WHAT: Centeno Potato Judging Contest for Scholastic Book Fair
WHEN: Friday, September 19, 2014, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
WHERE: Centeno Elementary School Library, 2710 La Pita Mangana Road
ADDITIONAL: Centeno’s 9th annual Build a Potato Character from a Book contest challenges Pre-K- 5th grade students to build their favorite storybook characters out of potatos and common household items. Guest judges from the Laredo Public Library, Books A Million and other UISD campuses will judge the 100 entries that were crafted by students. Winners will receive Scholastic Book Fair gift certificates. This event is designed to promote reading.

2014 Booky Awards
Laredo Public Library
The Laredo Public Library Teen Advisory Board will be hosting the 2014 Booky Awards on March 20, 2014. Students in 6th - 12th grade in Webb County may participate in the competition for this year’s best book trailer. Students will create a :30 to :90 second video trailer on any book they choose. Students competing will have a chance to win in five categories and be awarded a trophy and prize. Winners for five categories will be chosen by a panel of judges the night of the event, Friday, March 20, 2014 at the Booky Awards Ceremony and one winner will be chosen by popular vote; voting will be conducted on Laredo Public Library's Facebook page from March 10 – 17.
Deadline for entries is March 5, 2014. Forms and files can e-mailed to firstname.lastname@example.org or dropped off at the Laredo Public Library, 1120 E. Calton Road with Niki Acosta or Rick Carrillo.
Each participant or group may submit one video per entry. Each entry must included signed model release form(s). All audio and artwork must be created by the entrant or be in the public domain and must be specified as such on the entry form. Visit https://creativecommons.org/legalmusicforvideos. All videos must be appropriate for viewing by audiences of all ages.
Videos will be judged on message clarity and relevance; motivation and inspiration; and overall impact. Categories include: Best Trailer; Best Use of Music; Best Editing; Best Script; and Best Acting.
