Flag Day ceremony

WHO: City of Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz and Laredo City Council; Fourth Degree of the Order of the Knights of Columbus, Laredo Assemblies 1129 and 2565; Laredo Police Dept; U.S. Border Patrol; U.S. Customs & Border Protection Office of Field Operations; Webb County Constable Rudy Rodriguez; Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar; Border Patrol explorers, others

WHAT: Flag Day Ceremony

WHEN & FLAG DAY WEDNESDAY, June 10, 2015 10:00 a.m.
WHERE: City Hall Flag Pole, 1110 Houston Street

WHY: In observance of Flag Day, the City of Laredo, joined by various law enforcement agencies and the Laredo Knights of Columbus chapter, will host a ceremony in front of City Hall. The public is invited to attend and is encouraged to wear red, white and blue in honor of this special celebration.

According to Wikipedia: Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened that day in 1777 by the Second Continental Congress.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August ,1945, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress, although it is not an official federal holiday.

1885, Bernard J. Cigrand generally is credited with being the “Father of Flag Day,” and according to the Chicago Tribune, “almost singlehandedly” establishing the holiday.

Working as a grade school teacher in Waubeka, Wisconsin in 1885, Cigrand held the first recognized formal observance of Flag Day at the Stony Hill School, when he stuck a flag in the inkwell on his desk and asked his students to write an essay on the flag and its significance.

From the late 1880s on, Cigrand spoke around the country promoting patriotism, respect for the flag, and the need for the annual observance of the flag on June 14.

He moved to Chicago and, in June 1886, first publicly proposed an annual observance of the birth of the United States flag in an article titled "The Fourteenth of June," published in the Chicago Argus newspaper. In June 1888,

Cigrand advocated establishing the holiday in a speech before the “Sons of America,” a Chicago group. The organization founded a magazine, American Standard, in order to promote reverence for American emblems. Cigrand was appointed editor-in-chief and wrote articles in the magazine as well, promoting Flag Day, patriotism and proper respect and veneration for the flag.

In 1893, Elizabeth Duane Gillespie, a descendant of Benjamin Franklin and the president of the Colonial Dames of Pennsylvania, attempted to have a resolution passed requiring the American flag to be displayed on all of Philadelphia’s public buildings.

On June 14, 1908, Theodore Roosevelt was dining outside Philadelphia, when he noticed a man wiping his nose with what he thought was the American Flag. In outrage, Roosevelt picked up a small wooden rod and began to whip the man for “defacing the symbol of America.” After about five or six strong whacks, he noticed that the man was not wiping his nose with a flag, but with a blue handkerchief with white stars. Upon realization of this, he apologized to the man, but hit him once more for making him “riled up with national pride.”

The week of June 14 is designated as “National Flag Week.” During National Flag Week, the president will issue a proclamation urging U.S. citizens to fly the American flag for the duration of that week. The flag should also be displayed on all government buildings.

The day’s celebration kicks off at 10 a.m. with an opening ceremony led by Dr. Fred Solis, associate vice president for instruction.
The event also will feature an invocation by Sister Rosemary Welsh and Sister Maria Luisa Vera of Mercy Ministries, and the performance of the National Anthem by the new Campus Orchestra under the direction of music instructor Andrew Uhe.

LCC President Dr. Juan L. Maldonado and LCC Board of Trustees President Cynthia Mares will share some words of reflection with guests attending the formal ceremony. Congressman Henry Cuellar, a distinguished alum of LCC and long-time supporter of the college, will be the keynote speaker.

At the end of the ceremony, LCC staff and students will officially unveil a Palomino statue donated by longtime LCC supporters Steve and Linda LaMantia.

The festivities do not stop there, however. After the ceremony, students, families and the public are invited to share in an afternoon of fun, food, and games.

TAMIU Science Center and Planetarium
Family fun and the Disney movie, “WALL-E” will be featured presentations at Texas A&M International University’s 9th Lamar Bruni Vergara Planetarium Anniversary celebration Saturday, April 12.

The celebration will take place from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. at the Planetarium and will include food, music, crafts, face paintings, and presentations by local dance teams. “WALL-E” show times will be every two hours, from 2 -8 p.m., with $3 general admission. Funds generated at the Anniversary will help support the Planetarium’s educational outreach initiatives, said Peter Davis, Planetarium director.

“For years, the community has supported our Planetarium through thousands of individual and school visits as well as birthdays and other social events,” Davis said, “As we celebrate this anniversary, we would like to encourage everyone to bring their families for a day of both outdoor and indoor fun as well as invite friends who might not yet be familiar with our impressive and modern facilities.”

The TAMIU Lamar Bruni Vergara Planetarium is a one of a kind teaching, learning and special occasion space located at TAMIU. The Planetarium is open to the public for shows, star gazing events, field trips and private functions. It is one of the most sophisticated planetariums in the State of Texas and operates a state-of-the-art digital projection system. Its technology allows not only a view from planet Earth, but from any part of the known universe, taking audiences to structures unseen, except by highly developed telescopes.

The Digistar 3 projectors use powerful graphics hardware and software to generate immersive full-dome images on the interior surface of a dome, integrating all-dome video, real-time 3D computer graphics, and a complete digital astronomy package.
