Summer Food Service Program Kick-Off

May 29, 2014 @ 9:45 am

United High School located at 2811 United Avenue (in the cafeteria)

What happens when school lets out for the summer? Are students still getting the proper nutrition that they need? A lack of nutrition during the summer months may set up a child for poor performance once school begins again. Hunger may also make children more prone to illness and other health issues. UISD wants to make sure that all students, and their parents, know about the free Summer Food Service Program which is designed to fill that nutrition gap and make sure all children can get the healthy meals they need. The free program begins June 9 at various locations and is free to all children (regardless of school meal eligibility during the school year) from one to 18 years of age. No registration is required for those attending.

Laredo 6th annual Spring Break Kite Festival

Date(s): 3/13/2014

North Central Park
The iconic, traditional diamond shaped-kite, flying carefree in the wind is reminiscent of a simpler, carefree childhood. It is also one of the most easy, entertaining and affordable ways for a family to have fun together. The bright colors and soaring heights will create memories that can last a lifetime for a child.

That’s why the Sixth Annual Spring Break Kite Festival is perfect for Laredo kids, and their families, to have a fun, and free, good time. This year’s event will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2014, from 12-7 p.m. at North Central Park.

Participants and spectators can find parking at United Day School. Additionally, El Metro has partnered with Wal-Mart at Loop 20 and International Boulevard to offer a free Park & Ride option to the Kite Festival.

The kite festival is open to kids of all ages, including those who are kids at heart. There is no registration or entrance fee to the festival. Everything is absolutely free! Just show up with a kite, store-bought or homemade, and start flying!

For those who are serious about their homemade kite, however, take notice of the following kite contest information. A Homemade Kite Contest will take place at 4 PM and will feature such interesting categories as longest/prettiest tail, most school spirit, best engineered, best use of recycled material, smallest/biggest, most unique and various age categories, with prizes from Imagine My Smile Dental Care and Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt and movie tickets. Celebrity judges will make the determination of all entrants. All are welcome to enter.

Even if you don’t have a kite, come on out. A limited number of kites will be given out for free, along with healthy snacks while supplies last, thanks to generous sponsor HEB. Of course, UnitedHealthcare, Imagine My Smile Dental Care, and Doctors Hospital will also be promoting a healthy living message by distributing information and offering BMI tests. Kids can also enjoy Safety Town, thanks to AEP Texas, a model community that teaches power safety line; sponsors AT&T will echo that same message.

A community favorite, the petting zoo and pony rides, will be one of the main attractions featured, thanks to sponsors Murillo Auto & Tire Service and State Farm Agent Manuel Gomez, III. However, if you or your little ones are looking for a little more exhilaration, then the carnival rides and jumping castles sponsored by the Laredo Firefighters Union #872 and the Laredo Police Officers Association will do just nicely.

Additionally, promoting safety and enhancing the relationship that all local law enforcement agencies have with the community is another focus of the annual Kite Event, with several activities geared toward safety and protection. Showing off their all terrain vehicles will be the U.S. Border Patrol and U.S. Customs & Border Protection, where kids can take pictures as future Customs officers. Both the Laredo Police Department and Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar will feature the KidID program which collects children’s fingerprints. The Laredo Fire Department will bring the Fire Safety House, which teaches kids how to safely recognize and escape a fire in a home.

In fact, festival organizers have gone out of their way to ensure that the day is truly a family-friendly outing. Aside from the kite flying, there will be plenty of other games and activities, including hay rides and games, courtesy of the City of Laredo Parks & Leisure Services Department and wildflower seed planting thanks to Keep Laredo Beautiful. Great music with the classic styling of everyone’s favorite DJ, Rule Garcia, so everyone can have a fun-filled afternoon, will fill the park’s air. Finally, if that isn’t enough, be sure to catch the car show by the Pure Envy Car Club.

District VI Council Member Charlie San Miguel will once again host the event, along with the City of Laredo and numerous sponsors, including HEB, who is proud to be Helping Here. Other sponsors include AEP Texas; AT&T; Imagine My Smile Dental Care; Murillo’s Auto & Tire Service; State Farm Agent Manuel Gomez, III; UnitedHealthCare; Laredo Firefighters Union #872; Laredo Police Officers Association; and Chick-fil-A. The event is proudly being brought to you by Guerra Communications and Lamar Advertising.

Laredo Public Library's 11th Annual Poetry Festival

Date(s): 3/21/2014

6:00 pm (deadline)

Laredo Public Library 1120 E. Calton Ave.
Are You A Poet And Don’t Know It?
Annual library poetry contest deadline nears

WHO: Local students, as well as area adults

WHAT: 11th Annual Laredo Poetry Festival

WHEN & DEADLINE: Friday, March 21, 2014 6:00 p.m.

WHERE: Laredo Public Library, 1120 E. Calton Ave.

WHY: The Laredo Public Library’s 11th Annual Poetry Festival is once again upon us. Organizers hope to receive haikus, sonnets, poems that rhyme and poems that don’t, all vying for a bevy of prizes in the annual poetry contest.

“Poetry is such a beautiful and powerful way of expressing thoughts and emotions, social or political commentaries, or even, just silly and fun observations,” said Maria G. Soliz, Director of the Laredo Public Library. “That’s one reason why this contest is so valuable; it allows people to express themselves and to appreciate another form of literature that perhaps isn’t understood so well.”

Entries should focus on either one of two topics: “I Believe….” or any topic the author chooses to write about. Poems can be written in any format, but not be longer than two pages, double-spaced, and be in either English or Spanish. Only one entry per person is accepted.

Poems must be original; no plagiarized poems will be accepted. Entrants must fill out the application form, which can be picked up at the Laredo Public Library, from various school officials, or downloaded from the Library’s website from www.laredolibrary.org, which also has the contest’s official rules. Parents or legal guardians must fill out the release form for students under 18.

The different age groups include: Group 1: 1st – 3rd grade; Group 2: 4th – 5th grade; Group 3: 6th – 8th grade; Group 4: 9th – 12th grade; Group 5: Adults 18 and over. Students who are home schooled can also enter the contest.

A panel of 5-7 judges will review the poems and select the winners. The top three in each group will read their poems at the Poetry Festival taking place this year on Saturday, April 26, 2014, as well as receive various prizes, including a dictionary, a book of poems and some school supplies. The winners’ poems will also be published. All participants will receive certificates.

The contest is sponsored by the Diocese of Laredo Catholic Schools; Friends of the Library; Laredo Community College; Laredo Independent School District; Laredo Public Library; Texas A&M International University; and United Independent School District.

St. Jude’s is an internationally recognized organization for pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. No family ever pays for treatments not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay.
