Spring Dance Concert shines spotlight on LCC dance students
After dedicating many hours to perfecting choreography and practicing intricate movements, the talented dance students at Laredo Community College are set to take the stage for their annual Spring Dance Concert on Sunday, April 3 at 3 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater at the Fort McIntosh Campus.

The concert, presented by the LCC Performing Arts Department, will feature multiple dance genres, including ballet folklórico, lyrical jazz, modern dance, and ballet. Some LCC dance students also will showcase their talent for choreography with several dances set to contemporary music.

Student choreographer Heidy Guajardo will perform her own modern dance, “Fix You,” based on the music by rock band Coldplay. Guajardo obtained her Associate of Arts degree and studied dance under the direction of LCC Dance Instructor Danuta Gazdyszyn, who spearheads the college’s dance department and oversees the annual dance concerts. Guajardo credits her success and the success of her fellow dancers to the continual support and commitment given by Gazdyszyn.

“Ms. Gazdyszyn is the reason why I took the extra step to pursue dance. After joining her class, she gave me this new way of speaking and communicating. She’s my inspiration to continue my career in dance instruction,” said Guajardo.

The concert also will feature performances by special guest artists Higher Grounds Dance Studio, Ballet L’Ecole, El Estudio, and choreographer Silvia Jones.

General admission tickets are $10 per adult. Tickets for senior citizens and students with a valid ID are $5. Proceeds from the concert will be used for student scholarships and future dance concerts.
For more information on the Spring Dance Concert, contact the LCC Performing Arts Department at 721-5330.

Celebrate the Season

Laredo Phil’s ‘Celebrate the Season’ Raises
Voices This Sunday at 3 p.m. at LCC

On Sunday, December 6, 2015 at 3:00 p.m., Laredo Community College’s Guadalupe and Lilia Martínez Fine Arts Center theater will be filled with joyous music as student singers from across the city join with the Laredo Phil in concert to present “Celebrate the Season.”
This concert is made possible by the Guadalupe and Lilia Martínez Foundation.

“Celebrate the Season” follows on the extraordinarily successful concert held in honor of the city’s veterans in November. Though originally scheduled to be held in Blas Castañeda Park, the concert was relocated to Texas A&M International University because of inclement weather.

“This was one of the most brilliant concerts that this city has heard,” longtime music supporter Roberto Coronado said, “I am really excited to hear the next one.”

Concert tickets can be purchased at the door. Ticket price for adults is $20 and for senior citizens $15. Students, as always, are invited to attend free of charge.

Sunday’s concert includes a wide variety of very familiar holiday melodies from Sleigh Ride to a medley of tunes taken from such movies as “Miracle on 34th Street,” “The Polar Express” and more.

“Around the World at Christmas” gets its first Laredo performance and includes holiday music from various countries and traditions including “O Tannenbaum,” the “Hanukkah Song,” and “Go Tell it on the Mountain.”

A vital feature of this year’s musical celebration is the participation of musicians from the Vidal M. Treviño School of Communications and Fine Arts. The VMT Philharmonic and chorale will sit side-by-side with their professional mentors to perform the first movement of “The Christmas Symphony.”

These groups will also be joined by singers from the First Baptist Church (FBC) Choir.

“It is a great opportunity for our kids and the local singing enthusiasts,” said FBC choir director and LPO Tuba player John Reimund.

The afternoon’s Grand Finale will add singers from United High School choirs, and anyone in the audience who cares to join in, to perform the magnificent “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah.

The concert begins promptly at 3:00 p.m. in the LCC Martínez Fine Arts Center.

Admission is free and open to the public.

The recital will be performed by students in the TAMIU College of Arts and Sciences’ department of Fine and Performing Arts Applied Voice Studio taught by Dana Crabtree, instructor of music and voice.
Accompanist for the program will be Dr. Martha Saywell, adjunct and collaborative pianist.

“The Voice Studio Midterm is an opportunity for our applied voice students, many who are music majors with voice as their principal instrument, to showcase some of their semester repertoire to the public. Each of the students will perform one of their semester pieces, creating a varied program of art songs and opera/oratorio arias in a variety of languages,” explained Crabtree.

According to Crabtree, the students have been enrolling in applied lessons every semester, honing their skills and working steadily toward the goal of presenting an entire hour-long solo recital—one of their final degree requirements.

“We want to encourage the Laredo and TAMIU communities to come out and hear what talented students we have in our voice program. This is the next generation of opera and musical theater singers and music educators and many of them are from Laredo. This is something to celebrate!” added Crabtree.
