LCC to host annual Spanish Poetry Competition
De La Garza Building, Room 101
LCC Fort McIntosh Campus
Partake of Laredo’s rich dual-heritage by attending Laredo Community College’s 34th annual Spanish Poetry Competition on Friday, April 17 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the De La Garza Building, Room 101, at the Fort McIntosh Campus.
Sponsored by the English and Communications Department, the annual competition serves as one of the best exhibitions of LCC students’ pride in Mexican culture, skills in poetry, and mastery of the Spanish language.
Since its debut in 1981, this event preserves a classic pastime enjoyed throughout the eras and has become a staple of LCC student, faculty and staff life.
“As years pass, the selections and themes presented by contestants have become more diverse, embodying a wonderful and timeless mixture of a traditional art form with contemporary values and expressions,” said Rosalinda Herrera, who is an English as a Second Language and Spanish instructor, as well as the event’s coordinator.
Special judges will be invited to evaluate students’ performances based on delivery, time, and creativity. All contestants will be presented with certificates of participation; the top four poets and orators will additionally receive trophies.
LCC encourages any student with great ability for performing, public speaking, and/or a love for Spanish culture and poetry to take part in this celebrated event.
