LCC chamber music recital to showcase student talent

Event Dates and Times

5/9/2015 - Starts: 7:30 PM
Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater Fort McIntosh Campus
Indulge in the sweet sounds of violins and other string instruments as the Laredo Community College Performing Arts Department hosts a special chamber music recital on Saturday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater at the Fort McIntosh Campus.

Admission is free and open to the public.

The recital will showcase student instrumentalists in the form of a duo, trio, and a quartet performing pieces from composers such as Bach, Mozart, and Dvorak. The chamber performers will be under the direction of Andrew Uhe, upper strings and violin instructor.

“We chose the repertoire for this concert because of the variety of styles they represent as classics produced in the Baroque, Classical, and late Romantic eras by some of the most accomplished and admired composers of their generations,” said Uhe. “Additionally, works were chosen for their suitability in challenging the students to develop their musicianship and technical ability.”

Recitals such as this one not only serve as an occasion for the community to enjoy fine arts entertainment, but it also allow professors to place their students in an environment which requires an adept ability of juggling instrument mastery, music knowledge, and performance quality. This kind of fine entertainment has no strings attached, except for the instruments themselves.
For more information on the recital, contact Uhe at 721-5332 or the LCC Performing Arts Department at 721-5330.

5/9/2015 - Starts: 3:00 PM
Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater Fort McIntosh Campus
The winding banks of the Rio Grande, already filled with the natural music of our eclectic bird population, will soon resonate with even more beautiful melodies.

Laredo Community College’s next Song on the Rio Grande Concert will be on Saturday, May 9 at 3 p.m. at the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater on the Fort McIntosh Campus.

The concert, hosted by the LCC Performing Arts Department, is entitled “Our Earthly Life,” and features soprano Cheryl Parrish and pianist Rick Rowley. Admission is free and open to the public.

Parrish and Rowley will perform music by Wolf, Poulenc, Jordan, and more, interspersed with readings of Parrish’s own writings on life.

A distinguished voice faculty member at Texas State University in San Marcos, Parrish is a renowned professional opera singer whose roles include Constance in Francis Poulenc’s Les Dialogues des Carmelites, Adele in Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus, and Sophie in Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier, for which she has been particularly lauded.

Accompanying Parrish will be Rick Rowley, a highly celebrated musician who currently holds a senior lectureship at The University of Texas at Austin’s Butler School of Music.

His worldwide performances as both a concert soloist and collaborative performer have been received to great acclaim.

In addition to his musical expertise, Rowley is a veteran actor, musical director, and stage director, adding to his impressive list of accomplishments.

A master class with the artists will be held after the recital at 4:30 p.m., followed by an informal question and answer session. All events are free and open to the public.

Partake of Laredo’s rich dual-heritage by attending Laredo Community College’s 34th annual Spanish Poetry Competition on Friday, April 17 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the De La Garza Building, Room 101, at the Fort McIntosh Campus.

Sponsored by the English and Communications Department, the annual competition serves as one of the best exhibitions of LCC students’ pride in Mexican culture, skills in poetry, and mastery of the Spanish language.

Since its debut in 1981, this event preserves a classic pastime enjoyed throughout the eras and has become a staple of LCC student, faculty and staff life.

“As years pass, the selections and themes presented by contestants have become more diverse, embodying a wonderful and timeless mixture of a traditional art form with contemporary values and expressions,” said Rosalinda Herrera, who is an English as a Second Language and Spanish instructor, as well as the event’s coordinator.

Special judges will be invited to evaluate students’ performances based on delivery, time, and creativity. All contestants will be presented with certificates of participation; the top four poets and orators will additionally receive trophies.

LCC encourages any student with great ability for performing, public speaking, and/or a love for Spanish culture and poetry to take part in this celebrated event.
