National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy May 2014

Date(s): 5/7/2014

10:00 am

City Hall Council Chambers
Hundreds of thousands of teens nationwide are expected to participate in the thirteenth annual National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy on May 7, 2014.

The purpose of the National Day is to focus the attention of teens on the importance of avoiding too-early pregnancy and parenthood through an interactive online quiz.

On the National Day, teens nationwide are asked to go to http://www.StayTeen.org and take the National Day Quiz, which challenges them to think carefully about what they might do "in the moment" through a series of interactive scenarios.

According to STAYteen.org, More than 2,000 girls in the U.S. get pregnant every day.

Even so, it is still the case that nearly three in 10 girls get pregnant by age 20 and that the U.S. still has the highest teen pregnancy rate among comparable countries. We hope that, in some modest way, participating in the National Day will help teens continue to think carefully about sex and contraception, the possibility of pregnancy, and the lifelong challenges of being a parent.”

In support of National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy 2014, SCAN will be sponsoring a proclamation reading by the Honorable Raul Salinas, Mayor of the City of Laredo on Wednesday, May 7th, at 10:00 a.m. at the City Hall City Council Chambers. SCAN invites representatives from all media outlets in Laredo and Webb County to attend this special proclamation reading.
For more information about the proclamation reading, please contact Grizelda Carrillo, CPS at 956-724-3177.

National Take Back Pill Day

Date(s): 4/26/2014

10:00 am

Laredo Fire Department Administration Building, 616 E. Del Mar Blvd., and M.S. Ryan Elementary School, 2401 Clark Blvd.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Webb County Community Coalition will be teaming up on Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at two locations: Laredo Fire Department Administration Building, 616 E. Del Mar Blvd., and M.S. Ryan Elementary School, 2401 Clark Blvd. for a prescription drug “Take Back” Initiative that seeks to prevent prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse.

On this day, the DEA will oversee the collection of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Over-the-counter medication will also be collected.

This Take Back Initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue as many people are not aware that prescription medication in homes are often misused and abused. Prescription drug abuse rates in the U.S. have been increasing at alarming rates, as well as the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. The majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family members and friends, and many people do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medication. We would like to emphasize that, flushing several prescription drugs down the toilet or simply throwing them away can create significant safety and health hazards.

This Prescription Drug Take Back Pill Initiative is being conducted in conjunction with the Webb County Community Coalition to encourage individuals in the community to rid their households of unused prescription drugs that pose a safety hazard and can contribute to prescription drug abuse. We encourage the community to support this initiative by bringing all of their expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs to either the Laredo Fire Department Administration Building or Ryan Elementary School.
If you would like more information please call the SCAN Office at 956-724-3177 to speak with Veronica Jimenez.

South Texas Epilepsy Clinic

Date(s): 3/21/2014

9:00am

Mercy Ministries of Laredo 2500 Zacatecas St.
The Gateway City is receiving a visit from an individual that can help treat a certain medical condition.

Laredo residents age 10 and older who have seizures can be seen by an epilepsy specialist as part of the new South Texas Epilepsy Clinics, which are overseen by the Epilepsy Foundation Central & South Texas and UT Medicine San Antonio. This is the clinical practice of the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. The clinics are funded by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.

Octavian Lie, M.D., Ph.D., a board certified neurologist with UT Medicine San Antonio and an assistant professor of neurology at the UT Health Science Center, will see patients every other month in Laredo.

The first clinic will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, March 21, at Mercy Ministries of Laredo, 2500 Zacatecas St. Appointments are required. Please call 210-450-9700 to make an appointment and for more information. The clinic is for individuals who have Medicaid or are uninsured; residents with insurance also are welcome. Spanish speakers will be available.

The outreach clinics will include an epilepsy specialist physician, a case manager, social worker and a medical assistant. While Dr. Lie provides diagnosis, treatment and medication management, the Epilepsy Foundation Central & South Texas provides information, direct assistance, social services, referrals, employment preparation and many more services to those diagnosed with epilepsy.

Epilepsy is a lifelong medical condition that is best treated in an outpatient clinic by physicians, like Dr. Lie, who have specialized training in epilepsy. Without access to specialty care, patients have poor seizure control and are unable to drive, have difficulty holding jobs, and are at-risk for seizure-related sudden death.

The neurologists at UT Medicine are part of the South Texas Comprehensive Epilepsy Center in San Antonio, which is nationally accredited for the treatment of epilepsy. The center is a partnership between UT Medicine and University Health System. The center received a Level 4 designation, which is the highest designation from the National Association of Epilepsy Centers.
For current news from the UT Health Science Center San Antonio, please visit our news release website, like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter.
