Welcome to Laredo’s Newest “Little” Library

Event Dates and Times

11/23/2015 - Starts: 10:00 AM
North Central Park, Trailhead Facility 10202 International Boulevard
WHO: City of Laredo District VI Council Member Charlie San Miguel
Laredo Public Library, Parks & Leisure Services Department
Girl Scout Troop 9171

WHAT: Little Free Library Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

WHEN & November 23, 2015 at 10:00 a.m.
WHERE: North Central Park, Trailhead Facility, 10202 International Boulevard

WHY: When Girl Scouts Kiara Carrillo and Lauresther Medina-Jimenez from Troop 9171 were looking for project to earn their Silver Award they quickly focused on literacy! Inspired by their most recent badge work “Woodworker” and after doing their research, they decided to build a Little Free Library for their community. Ms. Carrillo and Ms. Medina-Jimenez selected Laredo’s North Central Park as the location for this project.

Little Free Libraries are an international movement! Since 2009 over 20,000 libraries have been established around the world. These libraries aim to make books available to people of all ages, to promote literacy and to inspire a community to have good reading habits - especially reading for pleasure.

Little Free Libraries are free book exchanges where anyone may take a book or return a book to share with others. There are no rules or late fees. Everyone can take part! It’s all about connecting with your neighbors and community. Ms. Carrillo’s and Ms. Medina’s hope to teach the community how a Little Library works and hope the community learns to use it and care for it. They also hope their project inspires others to start their own Little Free Libraries in their own neighborhoods.

Ms. Carrillo and Ms. Medina-Jimenez held a Book Drive among their sister Girl Scout troops and these books will be the first to be place in the Little Free Library. The projected expense was $150.00 which they raised through fundraising at public events.

The Library is registered with its own charter number and will be identified in a virtual map of Little Free Libraries around the world

and accompanying activities

WHEN & Wednesday, September 9, 2015 11:00 a.m.
WHERE: Laredo Public Library, Lobby, 1120 E. Calton Road

WHY: The Laredo Public Library will be host to the traveling exhibit on “The Diary of Anne Frank,” from the Anne Frank Center, USA in New York City. Anne Frank: A History for Today is a specially designed traveling bilingual exhibit in both English and Spanish that tells the powerful story of a young girl in hiding from the Nazis during WWII through photographs, letters and of course Anne’s own diary. The Frank family’s story is juxtaposed against world events during the rise to power of Adolf Hitler and shows how people were persecuted by political decisions and by the actions of individuals. The exhibit engages viewers in Anne’s experiences before and during the War, with the goal of promoting an understanding of how racism, indifference and apathy can destroy individuals, families and entire communities. Throughout the exhibit, Anne’s own wonderfully candid writing provides a central voice to the exhibit narrative, bring a poignant and truly beautiful perspective to the story.

Also part of the exhibit is a workshop training where teachers from United I.S.D. and the Catholic Diocese of Laredo will learn how to incorporate the book, and accompanying lessons, into the classroom.

Additionally, a live performance will accompany the display. Entitled Conversations with Anne: Growing up in Hiding is a one-act solo show, taken directly from Anne’s Diary and gives the audience an interactive look at Anne’s experience of her time in hiding.

The exhibit was made possible through the generosity of: Russell Deutsch; Irving Greenblum; Les Norton, Larry Norton, Rick Norton, Ruben Norton; and Jack Avigael of Faros Investment Co.
