LCC to host Spanish Nutcracker Dec. 13

Date(s): 12/13/2014

Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center LCC Fort McIntosh Campus
LCC to host Spanish Nutcracker Dec. 13

A holiday classic gets a Spanish make-over at LCC!

About 60 student dancers from the Laredo Community College Performing Arts Department and El Instituto de Cristina Greco will take to the stage to celebrate the season with some Spanish flair during the Spanish Nutcracker on Saturday, Dec. 13 at the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater at the Fort McIntosh Campus.
General admission is $10 per person. Tickets can be bought at the door.

The production is a unique adaptation of the original Nutcracker story set in Spain and with some added Spanish culture incorporated into the characters.

“The original story has been presented in many different places in various forms,” said Greco. “Some have opted into adapting the story with hip-hop elements, others into contemporary dance and even others with some traditional African dances. This particular version we are presenting is the story as it would happen in Spain. We’ve changed a few details to better suit this new context and make the story work.”

Greco, who felt inspired after seeing a similar version of the production by director Simon Blasco, thought it would be a good idea to present her own adaptation of the story in the Gateway City.

“Ever since I opened my dance studio, I made a promise to myself to someday make this adaptation. Now, after ten years, it finally has come into fruition.”

“I hope everyone likes this new take on the story, which has been presented in Laredo before but never quite like this,” Greco added.
For more information on the Spanish Nutcracker, contact the LCC Performing Arts Department at 721-5330.

35th season for Laredo Phil opens Sunday at TAMIU

Date(s): 10/5/2014

3:00 pm

Center for the Fine and Performing Arts TAMIU
Sunday’s opening of the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra’s 35th Annual Concert Season begins with the Beethoven Triple at 3:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall at Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Center for the Fine and Performing Arts.

The concert will host the world premiere of Trilogy for Organ and Orchestra, composed by Laredo Phil composer-in-residence and TAMIU faculty member Dr. Colin Campbell. As a very proficient organist, Dr. Campbell was commissioned to write a three-part work in a “modern” take on Baroque style.

Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony follows. This, his first symphony, was written to emulate the style of the classical composer Joseph Haydn. It was chosen to give the audience an opportunity to see how “modern” twists on old styles were accomplished approximately a century apart.

The final work of Sunday’s program is Beethoven’s Concerto for Piano Trio and Orchestra in C Major. Joining the Laredo Phil are soloists Stephanie Sant’ Ambrogio (violin), James Winn (piano), and Dmitri Atapine (cello).

Sant’Ambrogio has been described as a violinist “who most often takes your breath away” by Gramophone Magazine and been praised as an “expressive and passionate chamber musician” by the San Antonio Express-News.

Winn made his professional debut with the Denver Symphony at the young age of 13 and has performed widely in North America, Europe, and Asia since. He is a well-known specialist in new music and involved in numerous world premieres.

Atapine has been described as a cellist with “brilliant technical chops” (Gramophone). He has performed at the Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Chicago Cultural Center, and Spain’s National Auditorium.

“These three soloists will travel from Reno, NV, to partner with the Laredo Phil to create a memorable concert filled with styles from the past with a new and modern take on the old,” music director and conductor Brendan Townsend noted.
For more information on any of the concerts listed above, please contact the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra at 956.326-3042 or visit www.laredophil.com. Tickets are on sale via web or phone reservations, and will also be on sale at the door.

Laredo Community College Fort McIntosh Campus
New York-style jazz returns to the Gateway City as critically acclaimed jazz bassist Marcos Varela grooves back to Laredo Community College for a special jazz concert on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater at the Fort McIntosh Campus.

Admission is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature a selection of original jazz compositions by Varela, as well as classic jazz pieces from around the world.

LCC music instructor and department chair Mathew Adams said the concert will be a great follow-up performance.

“Varela’s first presentation at LCC was sensational and people can expect this concert to top last year’s show. There are many people in Laredo who appreciate improvisatory jazz music and many are looking forward to this concert specifically,” said Adams.

“This will be a very exciting event. Marcos Varela is an exceptionally talented jazz musician and he will be performing with a line-up of some of Laredo’s finest musicians. This is an excellent opportunity for Laredo to experience truly great jazz,” he added.

Varela has composed music for film and TV and has performed across the world with a variety of music legends, including Billy Hart, Charli Persip, Martha Wainwright and acclaimed composer Larry John McNally (Rod Stewart, Bonnie Raitt, Mavis Staples, Alan Toussaint).

A musical treat of beautiful guitar compositions will fill the senses as world renowned guitarist and public radio host Tony Morris stops by Laredo Community College for a special solo guitar concert on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Private David B. Barkeley Cantu Veterans Memorial Chapel at the Fort McIntosh Campus.

“The lecture is going to touch on a lot of elements about Mangoré’s amazing career, personal life and why he is considered the most important classical guitarist of the 20th century,” said Morris. “There is a whole culture built around him because he had a mysterious persona and lived a completely outrageous life.”

“I hope people can come out to the concert and enjoy the follow-up lecture the next day. It’ll definitely be interesting,” Morris added.
Morris is the host of the public radio show Classical Guitar Alive!, which is heard each week by radio listeners in more than 250 stations world-wide.
