LISD Elementary Campuses to host Meet the Teacher Night

Date(s): 8/20/2015

4:00 pm

LISD Elementary Campuses
Laredo Independent School District will be hosting Meet the Teacher Night on Thursday, August 20, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at each of their elementary campuses. Schools are inviting parents to visit their children’s classrooms during Meet the Teacher Nights. Parents and children are welcome to attend.

All elementary school campuses will open their doors to parents for a firsthand look into the learning their children will receive on a daily basis. Parents have the opportunity to meet their children’s teachers and learn what expectations they have set for their classes during the school year. Parents are advised to come prepared with a list of questions on their child’s education.

“Parents will have an opportunity to meet their child’s teacher and ask questions prior to the first day of school,” said Myrtala Ramirez, LISD Director of Elementary Education. “This will also be a good opportunity to bring their child’s labeled school supplies.”

The first day of school for LISD students is Monday, August 24.

WHAT: The Task Force for Children with Special Needs (TFCSN), the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), and Texas Parent to Parent are organizing the first-ever “Navigate Life Day” on Aug. 1 to celebrate and support families who have children with disabilities and special health care needs. This awareness day is part of a month-long education campaign designed to help families connect with each other and learn about a new state website, NavigateLifeTexas.org (or AvancemosJuntosTexas.org in Spanish). The website is the first of its kind in the country and provides comprehensive and relevant information about how to care for children with disabilities and special health care needs. During the month of August, nonprofit organizations and many other groups will participate in Navigate Life Day events in communities across Texas.

WHY: These events are part of a larger grassroots movement to inform and educate Texans about the new website and its offerings. Prior to NavigateLifeTexas.org, it was difficult to obtain reliable and relevant information for children with disabilities and special health care needs. Also, families had no single source they could use for research and support. The new website streamlines the process for those seeking help.

TAMIU Presentation Commemorates Constitution Day and Citizenship Day

5:30 pm

Senator Judith Zaffirini Student Success Center, room 101 TAMIU
The U.S. Constitution will be the focus of a presentation at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) commemorating Constitution Day and Citizenship Day Wednesday, Sept. 17.

The presentation, organized by TAMIU’s Phi Kappa Phi Chapter, will take place from 5:30-6:45 p.m. in the Senator Judith Zaffirini Student Success Center, room 101. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Lisa Paul, TAMIU associate vice president for Compliance, and Douglas Ferrier, TAMIU Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library director, will make presentations and lead discussions about the U.S. Constitution.

Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by 39 brave men on Sept. 17, 1787 in Philadelphia, recognizing all who are born in the United States or by naturalization, have become U.S. citizens.

The law establishing the present holiday was created in 2004 with the passage of an amendment by U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd to the Omnibus Spending Bill of 2004. Before this law was enacted, the holiday was known as “Citizenship Day.” The commemoration originated in 1940, with designation for this day as “I am an American Day.”

In addition to renaming the holiday “Constitution Day and Citizenship Day,” the Act mandates that all publicly funded educational institutions and all federal agencies provide educational programming on the history of the U.S. Constitution on that day.

Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Its chapters are on more than 300 campuses in the United States and the Philippines. Each year, approximately 30,000 members are initiated. It is a global network comprised of the best and brightest from all academic disciplines – a community of scholars and professionals building an enduring legacy for future generations.
For more information, please contact Dr. Peter Haruna, TAMIU associate professor of Public Administration, at 326.2613, e-mail pharuna@tamiu.edu or visit offices located in the Dr. F.M. Canseco Hall, room 313J. University office hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

March 5, 2014:

Each year, the event has grown and continues to be a meaningful way to showcase and illustrate the many educational opportunities given to more than four million students attending Texas Public Schools.

The event also proves to be a recipe for success as members of the community, parents, and teachers come together across the state of Texas to demonstrate the importance of education especially when young adults make the transition from high school to college.

Educators cannot accomplish this task alone as parent involvement and community support are essential for the success of students across the state.
