LISD Chess Club to host tournament on January 17

Laredo Independent School District’s Advanced Academic Program Chess Club is hosting a chess tournament for all scholastic chess players in kinder through 12th grades.
The tournament is scheduled for Saturday, January 17, at the Laredo Civic Center from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The five round Swiss Style tournament is open to all scholastic chess players. The contest will include United States Chess Federation (USFC) rated division and beginners non-rated division, each with primary, elementary, middle, and high school sections.
Registration deadline is Monday, January 12. Registration is not available on the day of the tournament. Check in is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. The tournament is free to all LISD participants and $5 for all non-LISD participants.
An awards ceremony will be held immediately after the tabulation of the fifth round. Members of the Laredo Chess Club will direct the tournament.
The LISD Chess Club next tournament is scheduled for February 28, 2015.

IMPACT Wresting presents Bound for Glory 2014

TNA Wrestling, in conjunction with Japanese-based promotion Wrestle-1, will produce and broadcast its biggest event of the year, Bound For Glory, outside of the United States.
Emanating from the famed Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan, Bound For Glory will be available exclusively on Pay-Per-View (PPV) Sunday, Oct. 12, beginning at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
At Bound For Glory, arguably the most-recognized Japanese athlete in all of professional sports, The Great Muta, will join forces with “The Japanese Buzzsaw” Tajiri to face Muta’s former student, the “reborn” Great Sanada, who will be teamed with his new mentor and leader of the revolution, James Storm in a much anticipated grudge match.
The newest members of the TNA Hall of Fame, Team 3D - Bully Ray and Devon, will be inducted into the exclusive club at Bound For Glory.
Bully and Devon will also be in action as Team 3D for the first time faces fellow hardcore legends, The Monster Abyss and Tommy Dreamer.

Laredo Enforcement Officers to Escort Flame of Hope to Special Olympics Texas Summer Games

Law enforcement officers from the Laredo area will gather at the Webb County Commissioners Court on Tuesday, May 20, for the kickoff of their annual Flame of Hope Torch Run from Laredo to Arlington for the Special Olympics Texas Summer Games.
The ceremony will start at 9:30 a.m. The Torch Runners will light the Flame of Hope and start on their 436-mile journey to Arlington. The Torch Runners also will gather at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday at the IH-35 North Checkpoint. They will set off from there to Cotulla, where they will pass the torch to runners in Dilley, Pearsall and San Antonio.
Agencies participating include: ICE-Laredo, the Laredo Police Department, the United I.S.D. Campus Police, U.S. Customs & Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol – Laredo Sector, U.S. Customs & Border Protection – Office of Air & Marine – Laredo Air Branch, U.S. Customs & Border Protection-Laredo Field Operations Laredo Port of Entry, Webb County Constable Pct. 4, and the Webb County Sheriff’s Office.

More than 400 law enforcement officers and first responders are expected in Arlington to deliver the Flame of Hope and to participate in the Opening Ceremonies. This year is the forty-fifth anniversary of the Special Olympics Texas Summer Games. More than 3,100 athletes from across the state will participate in the competition, featuring events in athletics (track and field), basketball, cycling, gymnastics, soccer and tennis.
