LISD Chess Club tournament scheduled for October 31

Laredo Independent School District’s Advanced Academic Program Chess Club has scheduled a chess tournament for all scholastic chess players in kinder through 12th grades. The tournament is set for Saturday, October 31, at the Laredo Civic Center from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The five round Swiss Style tournament is open to all scholastic chess players. The contest will include United States Chess Federation (USFC) rated division and beginners non-rated division each with primary, elementary 4th, elementary 5th, middle, and high school sections.

Registration deadline is Monday, October 26. Registration is not available on the day of the tournament. Check in is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. The tournament is free to all LISD participants and $7 for all non-LISD participants.

An awards ceremony will be held immediately after the tabulation of the fifth round. Members of the Laredo Chess Club will direct the tournament.

The LISD Chess Club future tournaments are scheduled for January 9, 2016, and March 19, 2016.

We have a passion for pursuing a career in the Medical Field, therefore, earning a degree in Biology. We have decided to begin our journey in traveling this upcoming spring of 2016 as sophomores.

We share a dream together as best friends to travel the world and take advantage of the many opportunities life has to offer like studying abroad in Europe and continuing our education in medicine.

We are hosting a fundraiser “Bowling for Abroad” to be held at Jett Bowl North on Sunday August 2, 2015 from 12-3 p.m.

Saturday, April 25 at 2:00 p.m. and into Sunday, April 26 at 1:00 p.m.

WHY: Athletic enthusiasts with the Guns-N-Hoses boxing club have been working to
attain hosting this tournament for a number of months. In partnership with the Laredo Convention and Visitors Bureau and various other City departments, the tournament will be hosted this weekend, April 24-26, 2015 at the Haynes Recreation Center.

The student competition features youth boxing from the ages of 8-16 years old. The event attracts visiting clubs that will be utilizing various hotels across Laredo including the Staybridge Suites, Motel 6 at Rosson Lane, and La Quinta Inn and Suites all in the Bob Bullock Loop 20 area. Last year the event was hosted at LIFE Downs and approximately 52 clubs competed, representing 171 boxers.

“Hosting this competition in Laredo gives our local young boxers an opportunity to compete on a stage with talent from all across Texas and at the same time we get to show off our beautiful facilities and hospitable southern charm. I can’t think of anything better,” stated Tony Nañez, President of the Guns-N-Hoses of Laredo.

There is an entry fee for spectators of $10 per day or $20 for a three day pass, payable at the door. Championship bouts and awards are slated for Sunday afternoon.

The Laredo Logistics and Manufacturing Association (LMA) is hosting the 1st Annual Benefit Cancer Golf Outing

The Laredo Logistics and Manufacturing Association (LMA) is hosting its first annual LMA Benefit Cancer Golf Outing to be held May 16th, 2015 at The Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course in Laredo, TX.

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), more than 1.6 million people in the United States were diagnosed with cancer during 2014. In December 2014, Anita Ramirez, LMA Board Member was diagnosed with breast cancer. The LMA and its Board of Directors are putting together this event to bring people together for an afternoon health awareness and golf, all to benefit those fighting cancer.

The format for the outing is a 2-man scramble with shot-gun start at 1pm. The cost per player is $70 and includes range balls, golf, and meal afterwards. This year, all proceeds from the event will benefit Anita Ramirez, LMA Board Member.

The public is invited to The Max for an afternoon of golf and Cancer awareness. Booths will be set up from various Health and Cancer organizations with information related to health and cancer prevention. Those that do not wish to play golf can enjoy the view of the Rio Grande on the second floor of the clubhouse.

To support the cause, LMA is asking for everyone to dress in pink (breast cancer) and teal (ovarian cancer).

Laredo Enforcement Officers to Escort Flame of Hope to Special Olympics Texas Summer Games

Law enforcement officers from the Laredo area will gather at the Webb County Commissioners Court on Tuesday, May 20, for the kickoff of their annual Flame of Hope Torch Run from Laredo to Arlington for the Special Olympics Texas Summer Games.

The ceremony will start at 9:30 a.m. The Torch Runners will light the Flame of Hope and start on their 436-mile journey to Arlington. The Torch Runners also will gather at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday at the IH-35 North Checkpoint. They will set off from there to Cotulla, where they will pass the torch to runners in Dilley, Pearsall and San Antonio.

Agencies participating include: ICE-Laredo, the Laredo Police Department, the United I.S.D. Campus Police, U.S. Customs & Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol – Laredo Sector, U.S. Customs & Border Protection – Office of Air & Marine – Laredo Air Branch, U.S. Customs & Border Protection-Laredo Field Operations Laredo Port of Entry, Webb County Constable Pct. 4, and the Webb County Sheriff’s Office.

More than 400 law enforcement officers and first responders are expected in Arlington to deliver the Flame of Hope and to participate in the Opening Ceremonies. This year is the forty-fifth anniversary of the Special Olympics Texas Summer Games. More than 3,100 athletes from across the state will participate in the competition, featuring events in athletics (track and field), basketball, cycling, gymnastics, soccer and tennis.

Raminator Prepares to Crush the Competition at Monster Jam

A monster is making its way to Laredo—Monster Jam that is! Taking place at the Laredo Energy Arena on March 8th-9th. On Saturday from 11:30am until 1:00pm during Party in the Pits, all are invited to get up close with the fan-favorite monster truck, Raminator and meet the team behind the truck, the Hall Brothers Racing team. Rally for Raminator, sponsored by the Ram Truck brand, as it “drops the hammer” and competes in the racing and freestyle showdown starting at 7:30 on Saturday and 2:00pm on Sunday. Laredo Monster Jam will be one of the first opportunities for guests to check out Raminator’s brand new design for 2014. Fans are invited to get up close to Raminator and meet the Hall Brothers Racing team, grab a photo and autograph.
