LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - The Mexican consulate is clearing up rumors after social media posts claimed new restrictions make it harder to travel into Nuevo Laredo.

For many people, crossing back and forth into Nuevo Laredo is a daily practice.

As an avid bridge crosser, Juanita Carraman says she was concerned when she heard additional requirements were going to be implemented to enter our sister city.

“I heard they were going to ask for the COVID test results, but I have not been asked for it.”

If this were to be true, many bridge pedestrians we spoke to say they would simply stop traveling to Nuevo Laredo.

“I’m not going to cross them, as of now have never taken a COVID test,” said Carraman.

“Then I won’t, I think many people would do the same,” said Victor Martinez.

Mexican Consul General Juan Carlos Mendoza Sanchez says nothing has changed, these are just rumors.

This misinformation happened when several social media posts claimed people entering Nuevo Laredo would have to show a negative COVID-19 test result before being allowed entry.

“It’s completely false. This is why we are addressing it because we had many calls.”

Mendoza Sanchez says if any COVID health restrictions were to change it would be a decided by the state of Tamaulipas, not Nuevo Laredo’s local government.

“On Facebook, you can’t believe anything,” said Martinez. “We have to check and investigate if it’s true. Many times, people post just for the sake of it.”

Mendoza Sanchez urges people to visit legitimate government websites for accurate information.
