Gunfire reported in Nuevo Laredo after arrest of alleged crime boss

NUEVO LAREDO, MX. (KGNS) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection is speaking out after gunfire erupted in Nuevo Laredo early Monday morning.

Mexico’s president confirmed the arrest of a leader part of a criminal organization sparked the gun battle.

CBP said it deployed its tactical enforcement officers and special response team operators.

This was to ensure the safety of the traveling public and their officers.

Although bridge traffic did not stop and continued to flow normally, the U.S. Consulate in Nuevo Laredo cancelled visa appointments for the day.

Mayor Pete Saenz is asking the traveling public to remain vigilant when visiting our sister city.

“I know our police department and officials on this side, can share and are prepared to share any information we may have with Mexican officials. I can upon every citizen, both in Mexico and U.S. to be alert. Obviously careful where you find yourself. If you know something, please call it in. We need to stop this, prevent this.”

As of 1 p.m., the U.S. Consulate in Nuevo Laredo said they were continuing to closely monitor the security situation in the city.

The city government has announced a return to normal functions, with the exception of schools.

Instructions to shelter in place are no longer in effect.
