LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - The Area Health Education Center is offering courses that will empower community members with the abilities to potentially save someone's life during a medical emergency.
AHEC is a local organization that helps promote health and well-being throughout the City of Laredo as well as Nuevo Laredo.
During an emergency situation, timing is crucial and the center wants members to be more than a bystander and spring into action when help is needed.
As a result, AHEC will be hosting its first aid training class.
The course will be eight hours long and it will cover, CPR, bandage, the abdominal thrust maneuver as well as how to contact the proper officials.
According to the American Red Cross, approximately 475,000 Americans will die from a cardiac arrest in one year.
CPR is not the only skill AHEC will be teaching; the center will also touch base on mental health first aid.
Adults who work with children will be trained on how how to deal with children who are struggling with depression, suicide or any other issues.
