LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) - The City of Laredo is wrapping up its first year in the Bloomberg Philanthropies “What Works Cities” program.
The program is a national initiative meant to help mid-sized cities improve how they use information to improve the quality of life for its residents.
The city has been working with people assigned to Laredo from Johns Hopkins University and other foundations to take the data collected from the different local departments.
The information services and telecommunications director, Homero Vazquez Garcia says, “We're working toward our first goal of having financial transparency that will be online for all the citizens of Laredo to be able to actually have access to, to promote open data and open government."
Laredo was able to become a part of the initiative thanks to efforts of private citizens joining up with the mayor’s and city manager’s office for the application process.
