LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) - Webb County recently received funds for a new detox facility at the youth village.
For nearly 10 years, residents have been questioning when the proposed rehab center is expected to be completed.
The detox center has been in the works for nearly a decade, but the county is planning on moving forward to have the facility completed as soon as possible.
The cost of the project is approximately 3.6 million dollars.
According to Commissioner Wawi Tijerina, the design and architecture of the facility is complete.
One of the reasons for the delay is that the construction contract is still under review and needs to be approved in order to proceed with the project.
Tijerina says she thinks the detox center will be beneficial to many teens in the community.
Tijerina says, “These individuals need help. A lot of times it's a waste of time putting them behind bars when they actually need more help, so they can become productive members of our society."
The expected completion date of the facility is still unknown at this time.
The facility will serve as a rehab center to treat teenagers who are struggling with drug addiction and depression.
